Researchers in America believe they have found a link between asthma or allergy during pregnancy and an increased risk of the child developing autism.

The risk was raised further if the mother was diagnosed in the second trimester of her pregnancy, according to Lisa Croen, a scientist at Kaiser Permanente's division of research in California.

The study, published in the Archives of Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine, found no statistical link between children developing autism and 44 auto-immune diseases in mothers, including rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes and multiple sclerosis. The exceptions were psoriasis, asthma and allergies.
